As from Monday, September 9th 2024. A new process for handling death certificates will take effect across the UK. Here's what you need to know:
*What’s changing?*
This new law requires all deaths, whether at home or in the hospital, to be reviewed by a Medical Examiner. This person will independently check the cause of death and be available to answer any questions or concerns from the family.
*Why is this happening?*
The new system aims to: -
Ensure deaths are thoroughly and independently reviewed.
Help families get answers from a doctor who wasn't involved in the care of the deceased.
Improve the overall accuracy of death records.
*How does this affect you?*
This new process adds an extra step before the death certificate is issued, which might mean a delay in arrangements like burials, especially those traditionally done quickly.
During this time, it’s important to work closely with your Funeral Director, who will help guide you through these new procedures.
